Proto-Italic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Possibly an i-stem derivation of Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂w- (nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors); compare Mycenaean Greek 𐀏𐀨𐀹𐀡𐀫 (ka-ra-wi-po-ro /klāwi-pʰoros/, key-bearer). Possibly *kleh₂w- gave *klāwos, Latin clāvus; alternatively Latin clāvis may have been borrowed from Ancient Greek κλείς (kleís), ultimately from the same Indo-European source.[1]
