[edit]From earlier *kensējō, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱens-éh₁-ye-ti, from *ḱens- (“to announce”). Cognate with Sanskrit शंसति (śáṃsati, “to declare”), Proto-Iranian *cánhati (“idem”).[1]
