Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *dʰǵʰyésteros +‎ *-nos. The Proto-Italic reflex was generated by the apheresis of *dʰ-, otherwise it would be **θ(j)esternos.

Cognate with English yester- (cf. yesterday), German gestern (cf. Gestern) and Dutch gisteren.
