Reconstruction:Proto-Italic/ātros
Appearance
Proto-Italic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From an adjective derivative of Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₁ter- (“fire”), with the colour sense arising from the colour of the soot made by a fire. De Vaan finds such a semantic shift hard to believe, but he cannot find any alternative etymologies.[1]
