Uncertain; probably from Proto-Indo-Iranian *rúkš (compare Wakhi ruxnyirk (“white barley”)), from Proto-Indo-European *léwk-s ~ *luk-és (“something bright, white”), from *lewk- (“to shine”) +‎ *-s.
