Etymology

From earlier *gāmáyati, contaminated by *Háǰant, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gāmáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷom-éye-ti, from *gʷem- (to go) +‎ *-éyeti. Cognate with Sanskrit गमयति (gamayati).
