Etymology

Cognate with Chinese (OC *koːʔ). Possibly related to Proto-Austronesian *(u-)(ŋ)kuɣkuɣ (dog). Old Chinese borrowed from a language that was ancestral to Hmong-Mien (Norman, 1988; Benedict, 1996).
