[edit]Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Germanic *waisundaz, from *wais- + *-undaz (body part suffix), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *weys- (“to flow”) (compare Sanskrit वेषति (véṣati, “to flow”)).[1] Possibly related to Norwegian veise (“rivulet; horsetail”).
