[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *weys- (“to flow”), whence also Proto-West Germanic *waisund (“windpipe, gullet”), Sanskrit वेषति (véṣati, “to flow”), and perhaps Proto-Germanic *waizą (“seaweed”) (whence Dutch wier (“idem”)).[1]
