Proto-Germanic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain, but possibly from a Proto-Indo-European *(s)lembʰ-, *(s)lemb- (to droop; sag; hang loosely). Compare Latvian slìps (slanting), as well as perhaps Proto-Germanic *slīpaną (to sharpen) (though whether *slimbaz ultimately traces back to Proto-Indo-European *sley- (smooth, slick) is unclear).[1]
