[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewp- (“tuft, cluster, hair on the head”), related to Middle High German schopf (“tuft, headhair, forehead”), Albanian çup (“without tail, maimed”). Compare to *skaubą and Proto-Indo-European *skub-, *skup-, *skupn- (“to curve, bow, vault”).
