[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sámh₂dʰos (“sand”), likely borrowed from a Western European substrate. Cognate with Ancient Greek ψᾰ́μμος (psắmmos), ἄμαθος (ámathos, “sand”), Latin sabulum (“coarse sand, gravel”).[1]
