Kluge's law alternant of *makô ~ **umkkaz after paradigmatic leveling of the stem to *makk-, from Proto-Indo-European *mógō ~ *m̥gnós, or perhaps *mōkô ~ **makkaz from *méh₂gō ~ *mh₂gnós; see the main entry for more on the root.
