[edit]Probably formed from the root of *lizaną (“to know, understand”), from Proto-Indo-European *leys- (“track, furrow, trail, trace”), equivalent to *lizaną + *-þiz. Compare also Proto-West Germanic *liʀnōn (“to learn”).
