[edit]From Pre-Germanic *(h₂)lewgʰeh₂, from either Proto-Indo-European *lewgʰ- or *h₂lewgʰ- ("to bind by oath"). Related to Proto-Celtic *lugiyom, Old Irish luige (“oath”).
