[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (“to be flat; palm”). Cognate with Lithuanian lópa (“paw, claw”), Proto-Slavic *lapa (“paw”),[1] as well as perhaps dialectal Armenian լափ (lapʻ), լուփ (lupʻ, “palm, flat of the hand”).
