[edit]From *kip-, *kipp-, *kīp-, from Proto-Indo-European *gipn-, *gibʰn- (“to split”), from Proto-Indo-European *gey- (“to split; dodge sideways”); or from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keypn-, *(s)keyp- (“to chip off, slice; a split piece, billet, stick”); or a conflation of both.
