Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic/hansō
Appearance
Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ḱómsōd (“union, gathering”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (“beside, by, with, along”) + Proto-Indo-European *sed- (“to sit”). Cognate with Latin consilium (“council, advisory body”); < *consodium, Russian сосе́д (soséd, “neighbour”).
Alternative etymology suggests possible derivation from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ken-, *(s)kend- (“to split off, secede”). If so, then related to *skinþą.
