[edit]Kroonen derives the word from Pre-Germanic *gʰodom, itself from *getaną (“to find a way; to get”), and rejects connections to Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰed- (“to defecate”) (whence Sanskrit हदति (hádati, “idem”)).[1]
