Etymology

Kroonen derives the word from Pre-Germanic *gʰodom, itself from *getaną (to find a way; to get), and rejects connections to Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰed- (to defecate) (whence Sanskrit हदति (hádati, idem)).[1]
