Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain, possibly related to Lithuanian plėšti (to tear).[1] However, compare Proto-Indo-European *pel- (to beat, push, drive).

Maybe related to *flakaz (flat) if the original sense was rather "place, region".[2][3]
