From Proto-Indo-European *pamp-, *bamb- (“to inflate, swell”), a root of apparently sound-symbolic origin, referring to the inflated size of giants. Cognate with Lithuanian pamplỹs (“ball-shaped lump”), Latvian pàmpt, pempt, pupt (“to swell”).^[1]
