Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰil-i-s, from *bʰil- (good, decent); the original sense seems to have been "equal, even". Cognate with Ancient Greek φίλος (phílos, dear, beloved, lief), Old Irish bil (good, mild).[1]
