Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *bʰil-i-s, from *bʰil- (“good, decent”); the original sense seems to have been "equal, even". Cognate with Ancient Greek φίλος (phílos, “dear, beloved, lief”), Old Irish bil (“good, mild”).[1]
