From Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰon-eh₂, from *gʷʰen- (to strike, kill).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Likely part of the same series as *banjō and such - is there a source/reference that explicitly spells it out though? Also, is there any literature on the *gʷʰen- theory (as it was treated with skepticism by Kroonen and Orel)?”
