Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂oyd-sth₂-o-, from the root *h₂eyd- (to swell) (see *aitaz, *aitrą) with a suffixed root *-sth₂-, a formation common also to Balto-Slavic: Lithuanian ìnkstas (testicle, kidney), Old Church Slavonic исто (isto, testicle, (pl.) kidneys, guts). Compare also Albanian eshke, veshkë (kidney).[1]
