[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydʰ- (“to burn, shine”), apparently continuing an extension *h₂ey-dʰh₁- (“to put to the fire”).[1] Related to Ancient Greek αἴθω (aíthō, “to ignite, kindle”).
