Proto-Germanic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

As its descendants show, this word had already undergone Grimm's law long before its first attestation, and so was likely borrowed long before the break-up of the Germanic languages. The first element is from the genitive plural of *harbaþaz (a Carpathian), and is ultimately from the same source as Latin Carpates.

Proper noun

[edit]

*Harbaþǫ̂ falisōz m

  1. the Carpathians
