[edit]From pre-Germanic *-ut, oblique *-ít-. The suffix is also found in Latin caput, oblique capit-, and Celtic *karuts (Old Irish caur), which is additionally cognate to the Germanic ethnonym *Harudiz, attested as Latin Harudes.
