From Proto-Uralic *warᴈ. Possibly an onomatopoeic root. The descendants reflect three forms: *varis, *varës and *varoi (probably with the diminutive ending *-oi). For this, compare *jänis. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
