Etymology

Possibly borrowed from (Northwest) Proto-Germanic *wādiz +‎ *-ëk. According to LÄGLOS, a Germanic origin is very likely, but a Proto-Germanic origin is uncertain; the word could instead be a later Germanic borrowing.[1]
