[edit]According to Pystynen (2024), from Proto-Finno-Permic *tuppas, borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stúHpas (whence Sanskrit स्तूप (stūpa)).[1] Alternatively, possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *þūbaz (whence Icelandic þúfa).
