Etymology

From earlier *kaišas, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *gaizaz. The descendants that split later than Livonian and Võro use the form *keihäs instead, with a later sporadic shift *ai > *ei (compare *haina, *laipa, *saibas, *saina). Doublet of *kaira.
