Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From earlier *šopëta (“soft”); cognate with Proto-Samic *suopētē. Possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *samftijaz (“soft”) and nativized with the suffix + *-ëda. The sense "silver" derives from the fact that silver is softer than copper, which was the first main metal known by (early) Finnic speakers.
