Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably related to Proto-Samic *sijtë, from a common Pre-Finno-Samic *šijte. According to UEW, possibly from Proto-Uralic *šijte ~ *šijta, in which case related to Northern Selkup [script needed] (tiitɜ).[1] Alternatively, the word may be borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hīþaz or Proto-Germanic *sīdǭ.[2][3] Furthermore, Aikio has implied that the Samic word is potentially of substrate origin.[4]
