Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably contracted from the genitive ending *-n + *ülä (upper, above) + Proto-Uralic *-na (locative suffix), perhaps through a Uralic postposition *ülnä: (*-n-ülä-nä >) *-n-ülnä > *-n-lnä > *-lnä > *-lla/*-lla.[1]

In the past also thought to derive from *-la + the aforementioned locative suffix, with *-llA < *-l-nA.

Suffix

[edit]

*-lla / *-llä

  1. Adessive case ending.
