Likely a Proto-Edekiri innovation, the use of a -ri- interfix is common in descendant languages, see *ì-wòrìwò, òfòrifo, ultimately *ɛ̀- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ *ɣɔ̀rɪ̀ɣɔ̀ (partial reduplication of *ɣɔ̀ "to spray, to smoke"). Likely cognate with Edo ìghòghò (smoke)
