Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Disputed. Summarized from Irslinger (2002):[1]

  • Pedersen, implying *sɸlixstus, relates this to Ancient Greek πλίσσομαι (plíssomai) via a putative Proto-Indo-European *(s)pleygʰ-. Frisk, Mayrhofer, and Schrijver reject this connection.
  • Foy, LEIA, Hamp (and also Matasović[2]) go for a connection to Proto-Indo-European *stel- (to spread), via an extended *st(é)l-t-tus. This requires posing an isolated -t- extension to the root, which does not satisfy Irslinger.
  • Irslinger, citing De Bernardo Stempel, prefers to derive this from a root *spelt-, avoiding the need for an aberrant root extension.
