Usually related to *kreddīti (to believe),[1] but the derivational pathway is unclear.

The gender of this word is unattested in Old Irish, and Middle Irish secondarily changed this word to a feminine i-stem. Brittonic masculine forms narrow the original gender down to neuter or masculine.
