Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Cognate with Latin badius, perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *b⁽ʰ⁾od⁽ʰ⁾yos (yellowish ~ brownish) whose root is unknown elsewhere. More likely, the word is a regional West European wanderwort, perhaps a borrowing from Celtic into Italic, where the semantics narrowed to a color term for horses.
