Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally derived from a root reconstructed as Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel-, but such a reconstruction has been doubted by LEIA.[1]

Noun

[edit]

*ɸaltan- f[2]

  1. razor

Reconstruction notes

[edit]

A formally problematic word to reconstruct, as the Goidelic forms can only reflect *ɸaltanā while the Brittonic forms must reflect *ɸaltanī.

Descendants

[edit]
  • Proto-Brythonic: *ėlltɨn
  • Old Irish: altan
