[edit]Borrowed from Vulgar Latin *[kiwˈtate~kiβˈtate], from Latin cīvitātem, accusative singular of cīvitās (“citizenry; city”).[1] Doublet of *kiwed, from the nominative singular, whence Welsh ciwed.
