[edit]Possibly from Proto-Celtic *wertom, from Proto-Indo-European *wért-o-m, for Proto-Indo-European *wert- (“to turn”), or perhaps borrowed from Germanic, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *werþą (“worth, value”) of the same root.[1]
