Proto-Balto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Possibly reflecting Proto-Indo-European *sewh₁-yéh₂[1], from Proto-Indo-European *sewh₁- (“to set in motion”).
Sometimes compared with Proto-Slavic *sujь (“vain, futile”), which is alternatively linked to Proto-Indo-European *ḱewH- (“to be hollow”).
