Etymology

Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éǵʰerom.[1][2] Cognate with Old Armenian եզր (ezr, edge, border, bank), Kamkata-viri āźo, āziu (pond), Waigali azā (pond). Connection to Ancient Greek Ἀχέρων (Akhérōn) doubtful.[1][3]
