Old High German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Thought to be from Gothic *𐌰𐍂𐌾𐌰𐌿𐍃 𐌳𐌰𐌲𐍃 (*arjaus dags),[1] itself a calque of Ancient Greek Ἄρεως ἡμέρα (Áreōs hēméra, literally “day of Ares”).[2] The latter Greek term is the origin of the Latin translation diēs Martis, which was calqued into Proto-West Germanic as *Tīwas dag, whence Old High German ziostag.
