From Proto-West Germanic *sīhwan, from Proto-Germanic *sīhwaną, from Proto-Indo-European **seykʷ-. Cognate with Old High German sīhan, Old Dutch *sīan, Old Saxon *sīhan, Old English sēon, Old Norse sía.
