From Proto-West Germanic *sneggō, from Proto-Germanic *sneggô, equivalent to Proto-Germanic *sneg-, *snag- (to creep, crawl) +‎ -ga (diminutive suffix). Cognate with Old High German sneggo, snecko (snail).
