[edit]Origin uncertain, but probably from Proto-West Germanic *lappiʀu (“flaps, lobes”), an irregular plural derived from Proto-West Germanic *lappō, from Proto-Germanic *lappô + -ic (diminutive suffix). Equivalent to læppa + -ic.
