Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *guddjō, from Proto-Germanic *gudjô (invoker, pagan priest). Cognate with Proto-Norse ᚷᚢᛞᛁᛃᚨ (gudija), Old Norse goði, Gothic 𐌲𐌿𐌳𐌾𐌰 (gudja, priest). Appears in the historical record as the personal name Gyddingas.
