Etymology

The origin is uncertain.[1][2] Has been compared to Northern Kurdish poz (nose), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (pwc /⁠pōz⁠/), Persian پوز (puz, snout, muzzle).[3] Note also Old Armenian գրտապոզ (grtapoz, a kind of Indian animal).
