[edit]Derived from the ellipsis of māla mattiāna, plural of mālum mattiānum (literally “apple of Matius”), referring to a kind of apple. The meaning of apple was subsequently transferred to *mattiāna shortly after ellipsis took place, and it was reanalyzed as a feminine singular noun.
